Climate Change is a huge problem for us all; the existential issue of our time.
It's daunting and feels overwhelming. But this newsreel/blog shows there are champions and successes happening daily that can turn the trajectory on GHG emissions, waste heat production and a number of related problems. We can get back to a more sustainable world, but it's going to take work and an occasional confrontation to get the change we need to survive and thrive in a more livable world.

As time permits, I'm going to put the esoterica I encounter related to climate change here rather than trying to update the various pages. So this will be in reverse chronological rather than logically organized within the structure of the rest of this website. Please don't rely on this as a consistent and current source for climate change information updates. Sadly, we cannot rely on our corporate-controlled mass media for good information on this, and my time is limited.

These might even come to Canada in 2026, as BYD already has manufacturing capacity in Canada (electric buses in Ontario).
(BYD is already grabbing 70% of EV sales in Mexico, so maybe Canada will just import those instead of taking some initiative.)
Big question. Are Canadian decision-makers smart enough to pivot and embrace EVs Canadians can afford, to the point of doing deals with Korea and China so we can make them and the batteries in Canada using Canadian steel, aluminum, plastics, lithium, sodium, iron, phosphorus, tires, and workers? Build on the Canadian strength of parts makers / suppliers and support those companies and their workers? Or are we going to keep pretending GM, Ford, Stellantis, Toyota and Honda are going to move jobs back to Canada after T-Rump fully destroys CUSMA and the integrated North American auto sector. Assuming Doug Ford will keep Ontario closed to Chinese and Korean automakers, here's a chance for Quebec to rebuild its old automaking legacy centered around Ste. Therese, with easy access to the Ontario Hwy401 corridor. Unless it doesn't want the jobs or increased market for electricity or making batteries or mining its rich lithium reserves. Be a great platform for parties that want to succeed the CAQ in the next Quebec election.

2026.01.30 This fossil fuel fiasco is going to hurt. Hard. Not just Albertans, but all Canadians.

When this fiscal folly collapses the Alberta economy and it's energy grid, it is Canadian taxpayers that will pick up the bill for climate change damages to other countries and organizations flowing from the ICJ Advisory Notification of July 2025.

Meanwhile, there is an opportunity for other Canadian provinces to embrace low-cost, fast-to-deploy renewable energy and storage, as the export markets in North America will explode in the next few years as fossil fuel electricity generation plants continue to fail in cold weather. 2026.01.24 Huge market opportunity for QC, NB, possibly MB and BC electricity generators

Massive winter storm strains US power grid as operators scramble to avoid blackouts (Fox Business)
From here until at least January 2029, the state of the U.S. grid and reliable, affordable supply will only get worse as the federal administration continues to cancel and obstruction new affordable generation projects.
In a rational provincial jurisdiction bordering the U.S. with a cross-border electricity transmission connection, this is a golden opportunity on a silver platter. Electricity generation from renewables is now substantially less expensive and faster to deploy than the old methods (coal, natural gas, nuclear fission, big hydro). All they require is permitting and allowing real private sector investors to actually do the projects and ensure they will be granted connections once ready to produce power. This can be coupled with agricultural operations, because we need food as well as electricity. Agrivoltaics are proving highly beneficial for farm revenue worldwide, and lead to better agricultural production as well, if approached with intelligence. Wind turbines take little space, and are a great combination with low-quality farmland (typically used for pasturing livestock) where the wind regimes are favourable. Run-of river submerged, low head and small hydro which do not block the full width of watercourses can be reliable producers with minimal environmental impact.
Coupling any of these with local energy storage turns intermittent generation into fully dispatchable - and much more valuable - electricity when customers demand it.
The price of electricity will only continue to increase for the next 3 years - minimum - as the AI data centre hype continues to fester, and as new generation is blocked from coming online in the U.S. until at least 2029. Even after that, it will take years for the U.S. to make up the supply shortfall being created now. Natural gas generation will become unaffordable in the U.S. shortly, as LNG for export sucks up supply, and the production volumes continue to fall in current production areas which are showing signs of depletion (e.g. Permian Basin).
This opportunity will not apply to Ontario so long as Premier Ford remains completely committed to funding the fiasco of unproven, U.S. built 'small modular' nuclear reactors which use enriched uranium which may have to be sourced from Russia, and more fossil methane from the U.S. ('natural gas') to increase Ontario's GHG emissions and generation costs, and continuing to block renewable energy projects. (Energy storage is proceeding, but without provincial funding.

2026.01.22 How does a story like this ignore storage?

Curtailment is not actually waste; it is a missed opportunity. Curtailment is an artifact of when electricity system designers focused on the intermittency of renewables (wind and solar), and chose to favour fossil fuels for their 'reliability'. (They reliably accelerate climate change, reduce air quality and increase health care costs.) There is always a mismatch between public grid demand and generators supply, even from traditional generation. That's why traditional power grids have always had buffer generation ('spinning reserve') and storage; hydro provided both. However, we have much less expensive storage options today like grid-scale batteries and modular pumped storage like HydroStor. Harnessing the power generated today from existing assets (effectively free) by storing the energy and then releasing it when demand increases - generally on a daily cycle - is a huge financial win for electrical grids for a relatively small investment in storage, especially distributed storage.
Higher return on investment from existing assets like wind turbines, solar panels and transmission networks.
By moving surplus electricity at low demand times to storage near point of use (e.g. near factories, urban substations), stress is reduced on the transission network, reducing premature aging.
Capturing the free electricity from avoiding curtailment displaces the use of fossil fuel generation, where the fuel is not free, reducing overall system cost per kWh, lowering electricity prices for all consumers.
GHG emissions are reduced, eliminating the need to pay for offsets or looney projects like carbon capture.
Air quality is improved, reducing health care costs.

2026.01.13 The Trump energy anachronistic thinking creates an opportunity for Canada - if we had some intelligent decision-makers

Donald Trump Suffers Legal Blow in His War Against Windmills (Newsweek)
Trump and his cabal are pushing to keep the energy monopolies afloat, while Australia is proving that battle has already been lost when consumers follow the money. The opportunity for Canada would be to build out PV and wind power with storage right now where the energy resources are suitable and the connections to sell low-cost electricity to the U.S. - directly or embedded in manufactured goods - starting within a year or two. The catch in Canada is that provincial premiers (notably Ford, Smith and Moe), are of the same mind as Trump: maintain the incentives to fossil fuel extraction and pummel electricity consumers in their provinces with a continuing string of terrible, short-sighted, political (not economically logical) decisions.
Whining about needing to export more and create jobs, while ignoring an immense financial win and more jobs in their provinces, hoping Trump will let them keep a few from dying industries that Trump has already said he is going to end. And it isn't just Trump pushing here; it's economic reality.

The current AI datacentre hype and pump should help with securing investment funding, but the current pumping of nuclear, gas and coal to the the uneducated (or suspect) decision-makers are a financial disaster in the making. Renewables plus storage is the preferred option, mostly for speed of deploymnet and lower energy production cost, with a better environment as a free bonus.
If commercial projects go to solar based on cost beating utility pricing and utilities continue to ignore PV plus storage in favour of their more expensive legacy technologies (nuclear, coal, gas), will the data centres bother connecting their power to the grid if the grid offers low pricing to maintain their profits and wires monopoly? It's a big gamble for distribution utilities if they end up driving grid defection by potential and existing big customers. I'm betting on the utilities to arrive at the wrong answer in the short term and being stuck with the resulting consequences in the long term. Where those investors are taxpayers, they should be very concerned about bad decisions being made now, e.g. in Ontario where the spectre of massive price increases from nuclear fission are already visible in the forecasts of the proponents (and based on their history, they are almost certainly lowballing the real costs).
The Ontario Clean Air Alliance pulled out some numbers from the OEB's forecast, and created an informative graphic.
However, readers should note these cents/kWh numbers are about OPG's expected costs. Retail electricity rates will be much higher - think double. By 2028, grid defection should be well underway in Ontario, based on those numbers. Add in lower cost house-hold storage (falling battery prices), lower-cost solar panels and economies of scale for balance of system, the economics will likely favour home generation and storage,
